What Clark Griswold Taught Us About IT Production Deployments

So "Christmas Vacation" is one of my all time favorite movies. My extended family and I watch it every year over the holidays, and no matter how many times I see it, it's always funny. And the older I get, the more I find it funny for different reasons.

Well I took it to a whole new (geeky) level tonight. After watching a clip of the movie a friend of mine posted on Facebook, I thought about how Clark's Christmas lights escapade reminded me of some of those production deployment horror stories from years past. Do you remember that night of production launch when something was not working and no one could figure out why, since you all tested the heck out of the thing for the 3 months prior and it definitively worked everywhere BUT production? So I sat on YouTube tonight adding some IT commentary to one of my favorite Christmas Vacation clips. Here you go and Merry Christmas!

Brilliant comparison! I think you have way too much time on your hands J.

“Is your house on fire, Clark?” “No, Aunt Bethany, those are the Christmas lights.”

Yes Ron, it's true I do need to get a life. Thanks for watching! Aunt Bethany is my favorite character from that movie. Hilarious.
